From March 31st - April 11th fighter town Leeuwarden Airbase was host to the international Frisian Flag exercise. Just like last year, main focus was on international cooperation with scenarios executed based on possible future deployments of NATOs Immediate Response Force.
The field of participating countries was different compared to last years exercise. With the RNLAF 323 Squadron being host, this and the other Leeuwarden based squadron (322) participated with a total of eight F-16AM each mission. Volkel airbase participated with four more aircraft, consisting of mixed 312/313 Squadron pilots. All European F-16AM/BM users participated in Frisian Flag; Belgium (4), Norway (6), Portugal (4) and Denmark (2). For the latter it was a first time participation in Frisian Flag. With the F-16AM/BM being a multi-role aircraft various missions could be flown, being either air-air or air-ground.
Flying only in the air-air role were the EF2000s and F-18C. The latter were from the Finnish Air Force and flew with 2-4 aircraft each mission. The German Air Force brought a relative large amount of aircraft to Leeuwarden of which 6-8 participated in each mission. First time participants were the Spanish Air Force EF2000s from Ala11, based at Morón airbase, four aircraft participated. Additional assets were provided by 334 Squadron RNLAF, flying with one C-130H acting as slow mover and Cobham Aviation, providing electronic warfare simulation. NATO's E-3A participation was cancelled due to operational commitments, its role was taken over by French Air Force E-3F flying out of its home station during a couple of missions.
