2012 06 05 Wittmund spottersday

Jagdgeschwader 71 (JG 71) Richthofen is a Fighter Wing of the German Luftwaffe based at Wittmund AFB. JG 71 was West Germany's first operational jet fighter unit and is currently the last operational German fighter unit using the F-4F Phantom II aircraft.
Today a spottersday was organised for the aviation enthusiast to see twelve Phantoms in front of their shelter. No flying was allowed by higher command. But this didn't made it a less interesting visit.

2012 06 05 Spotting at ETHE

While on-route to Wittmund for the spottersday, Koen and I went to Rheine-Bentlage in the morning. Here we find Mittleres Transporthubschrauberregiment 15. The unit is part of the Heeresflieger, the flying units of the German Army. Its history leads back to 1957 when Heeresfliegerstaffel 823 was found at Celle and 1960 when Heeresfliegerstaffel 101 was found at Rheine. Since 1974 it's flying the CH-53G and the Bo-105 was introduced in 1994 due to a reorganization of the Heeresflieger structure. Today the unit only flies the CH-53G.
